Water Rate Adjustment Effective in June

05-06-26

In 2019, Marshall Municipal Utilities (MMU) implemented a 10% adjustment to the water volume rate. Since that time, the Water Department has experienced significant increases in operating costs. Key treatment-related supply costs have risen between 75% and 164% since 2019, substantially outpacing general inflation.

In addition to rising operating expenses, MMU must address critical infrastructure needs within both the water treatment plant and distribution system. Much of the existing infrastructure was installed between 1945 and 1977 and has exceeded its useful life, increasing the risk of system failures and costly emergency repairs.

Recent engineering studies estimate the cost to rehabilitate and replace this aging infrastructure at over $30 million.  To maintain reliable service, address escalating costs, and proactively invest in system improvements, an adjustment to both the base rate and volume rate are needed.

Under the upcoming rate adjustment, the average residential customer using 4,000 gallons per month would see an increase of approximately $5.98 per month.  A summary of current and adjusted water rates is provided below.
