Miami #1 Substation Switchgear
What is a switchgear? A switchgear is a row of large breakers, including a main breaker and functions similar to the electric panel in a home or business, only much larger. Just like your home, switchgear is designed to interrupt and isolate faults on the electric system to prevent damage and isolate the area affected. Switchgear is one of the most important pieces of an electric distribution system for both safe operation and customer reliability.
MMU’s Miami #1 switchgear was installed in 1984 and is the oldest 15kV distribution switchgear in our system. MMU began evaluation of the power transformer, circuit switcher and switchgear lineup in 2022. As a result of this evaluation, the decision was made to replace the 15kV switchgear and the project was approved by the BPW at its 12/15/23 meeting. MMU selected Toth & Associates for the project engineering, specifications and bid evaluation.
Following a recommendation from Toth, MMU awarded the bid to Evans, Lipka, and Associates, Inc. for the new Eaton switchgear lineup in April 2024. In February 2025, MMU was notified that project drawings were non-conforming to the bid specifications. This required termination of the original bid award and a new request for bids. Following receipt of the new bids, and a new recommendation from Toth, MMU awarded the bid to Siemens. Delivery of the new switchgear is expected in March 2027 with project completion scheduled April 2027. Completion of this project will allow MMU to continue to provide the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to our customers.
