Customer Connect Center

MMU’s commitment to communications and broadband services began more than two decades ago. MMU management and the Board of Public Works recognized that investments in fiber infrastructure for electric operations could one day support new services for the community. In 2001, the Board authorized the creation of a communications department utilizing existing information technology (IT) staff. MMU soon expanded this vision by launching internet and intranet services—offering wireless and fiber connectivity to meet local needs with reliable service and competitive pricing. In early 2002, the first internet customers were connected.

While initially no new staff were hired to support these additional services, that changed over the years. That small group of IT staff evolved and expanded to become MMU’s present-day IT & Broadband Department. The team has grown in both people and equipment in order to keep up with the demand for internet services here in Marshall and throughout Saline County. In addition to internet services, this team continues to handle MMU’s internal IT needs.

MMU is moving forward with plans to construct a new facility to bring key staff and services together under one roof. The facility will be located on the former Power Plant site and it will house the Administrative, Customer Service, and IT & Broadband teams. It will feature improved customer access with multiple drive-thru lanes. Additionally, it will include a hardened, secure room to protect essential broadband and utility equipment, as well as a modern conference space designed for presentations and live-streamed board meetings.

In 2024, MMU selected SOA Architecture to design the new facility. The next steps include contractor selection and the beginning of the construction phase. MMU and SOA are working together throughout the process to ensure transparency, from choosing a general contractor to reviewing subcontractor bids.

This project represents an important investment in supporting our community’s growing broadband needs and improving the customer experience for years to come.
