"Providing Hometown Reliability"
Unit 5 is a 16.5 MW steam turbine that was installed in 1967. It burns coal or natural gas in its boiler. Proper startup requires 24 hours. It is our main power generation unit. It generally runs from June until October of each year. A new chemical feed system was added to our cooling towers in 1997, which allows us to buy bulk chemicals and eliminate most of our acid usage. We spend the majority of our maintenance budget on this unit because it is used to make 90% of the kilowatts generated.
