Wastewater Collection

Sewer Main Repair

Sewer Main Repair

The Underground Facilities Department maintains the sanitary sewer collection system for the City of Marshall. The initial construction of our collection system was started in the late 1800's using clay pipe. The system has since been expanded to about 81 miles of gravity and force mains using clay, concrete, ductile iron, and plastic, and five pumping stations. There are about 1,454 manholes in the system as well. Excess water from inflow and infiltration is our greatest problem with the aging collection system.

Overall, our collection system is adequate for our needs today. However, our industries and community are growing and as we continue to seek out and attract new industries, we will continue to expand and improve our wastewater collection system. The Larkin Group completed a study and reported on interceptor mains and a possible sewer district in the south part of town. Their study showed the need for more interceptor sewers in the west and south parts of town. Due to Excel changing their type of production, these sewers have been put on hold until a wet industry comes to town. Also in their study, they reported on sewer improvements for future development in the south part of town. In their report, they included the areas to be served and a solution to serving these areas.
